2001
The Homeless World Cup is conceived by Mel Young from Scotland and Harald Schmied from Austria, who come up with the idea when they meet in Cape Town at a global conference on homelessness.

2003
The first annual Homeless World Cup takes place in Graz, Austria. The tournament sees 144 homeless players from 18 countries compete. Austria beat England 2-1 to lift the trophy.

2004
Following the second Homeless World Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden, research is carried out that shows that over 80% of the players have changed their lives forever.

2005
Amazingly, the sun shines throughout the tournament when it’s hosted in Edinburgh, Scotland. Year round activity across the globe increases and the impact of the event and its aims continues to grow.

2006
Desmond Tutu praises the players from 48 countries as the Homeless World Cup is held in Cape Town, South Africa with many African countries taking part. The event attracts huge media coverage.

Copenhagen, Denmark hosts the Homeless World Cup with Eric Cantona holding special coaching sessions with all the homeless players. A Global documentary is released to great acclaim.

Thousands of excited spectators cram into Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia to watch a thrilling football competition. This year also sees the first ever Women’s Cup.

The grit and the glory of football and the story of real change is a hallmark of the Homeless World Cup in Milan. Italy. 48 nations and 500 players compete for the trophy.

The Homeless World Cup is held on the magnificent Copacabana Beach in Rio. Brazil street footballers dominate but as always everyone is a winner.

Over 300 games at The Homeless World Cup are broadcast live on the internet as the event takes place in a truly iconic location, underneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.

168,000 fans turn out to watch homeless players from 56 countries compete in the Homeless World Cup in the Zocalo Square in Mexico City. Yes, 168,000.

64 countries now compete in the 11th Homeless World Cup, which is held in Poznan, Poland. This year also sees the formation of the Supporters’ Club.

Watch out for a very special Homeless World Cup to be held in Santiago, Chile. Expect lots of added extras.

The Homeless World Cup returns to Europe as Amsterdam in Holland hosts the tournament. Changing the lives of even more homeless players for the better, forever.
